From the humble beginnings of a mining town just over 100 years ago the ‘City of Gold’ is today a burgeoning modern metropolis and Africa’s largest economic centre. Although not really seen as a major destination in terms of leisure tourism, Johannesburg has plenty to offer tourists. Museums preserve the priceless heritage of the history of the nation, while contrasts between the wealthy northern suburbs and Soweto offer an insight into the legacy of our colonial/ Apartheid past. Johannesburg is the hub from which the rest of Southern Africa is explored but it possesses some gems of its own.
