Makgadikgadi

In the middle of the Kalahari Desert, grassland and dry savannah surround a large dusty hollow. The largest salt pans in the world, the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are located in north-eastern Botswana.

The name of the Pans implies a vast lifeless land and for most of the year when they are dry salty clay crust, it does seem this way. But, when showered with rain, the water and grass of the Pans serve as a refuge for animals and birds. Migratory birds such as ducks, geese and White Pelicans arrive at this time as well at the only breeding population of Greater Flamingos in southern Africa. Other migrating animals include wildebeest and one of Africa’s biggest zebra populations and the predators they attract. Must-see sights in the area include the Baines Baobabs and Kubu Island from which visitors will have an impressive view of the igneous rock islands covering the white surface of the Sowa Pans.
