Okavango Delta
| Among an expanse of red sand, lies Botswana’s jewel and the largest inland delta in the world. The only permanent river in the desert, the Okavango Delta provides tourists with excellent game viewing opportunities by attracting hordes of birds and animals to its seasonal lagoons.
The delta’s area can expand to over 16, 000 square kilometres in the peak of flooding and shrink to less than 9, 000 square kms in the low water period. As the water travels through the delta, wildlife returns to the region. Between May and October, the areas surrounding the Delta start to dry out and wildlife congregate on the edge of the newly flooded areas. This is the best time for game viewing in the Delta. The best time for birding and vegetation is during the rainy season (Nov – April) as the migrant bird populations are returning and plants are flowering. Safari activities by water are the primary speciality of the Okavango, especially in the mokoro – a dug out canoe which is ‘poled’ along by a guide. This is the most evocative way of exploring the numerous waterways. Motor launches travel on the main waterways and lagoons. Traditional 4×4 game viewing vehicles are used on the main islands, with night drives available in the private concession areas.
